Blackness is under attack. This is nothing new, at least for the past 500+ years, but as far as our lifetimes are concerned, we are experiencing a powerful resurgence of efforts by white supremacists* to silence and subjugate people of color. Those who oppose the ideals of white supremacy – specifically, those of us who are “white” – have a sacred obligation to work on dismantling the racist structures that underpin our society and to protect the freedom, rights, and lives of our black and brown family members, friends, and neighbors.
White folks, we must defend blackness.
We must step up when we see racist action and counter it. We must show up to support and amplify the voices of black people. And we must speak up – loudly and forcefully – when we encounter racist speech or propaganda, particularly in so-called “white spaces.” We must not remain silent, and we must not allow the color of our skin to signal complicity with white supremacy.
